Texas is actually one of the few states that does not require a vehicle inspection in order to drive for Uber or Lyft. You may wonder why this is – is it simply because Texas is more lenient with driving laws? Nope – Quite the opposite!

One of the requirements in Texas is that all vehicles that are registered in the state must pass an annual safety inspection, whether or not the vehicle is used for rideshare purposes. Hence, one may conclude that motorists’ safety in general is actually a high priority for Texas.

Requirements for Lyft

For Lyft, the vehicle year requirements vary based on the city. Here are the specifics:

  • Houston: 2015 or newer
  • Austin/Dallas-Ft Worth/San Antonio: 2010 or newer
  • All other cities in Texas: 2005 or newer

And of course, just as with any state, in order to qualify for driving for Lyft or Uber in Texas, the must have:

  • 4 doors
  • 5-8 seatbelts, including the driver’s seatbelt
  • No cosmetic damage
  • No salvage title
  • No commercial branding
  • Texas registration (temporary or official, and registration need not be in the driver’s name)
  • Driver must be listed on the insurance
